Di Indonesia sendiri, bahasa daerah tentunya ada ratusan bahasa daerah. Pada tanggal 21 Februari biasa diperingati sebagai Hari Bahasa Ibu Internasional atau Mieling Poe Basa Indung Sadunya. Peringatan penting untuk mengetahui bahwa ada banyak bahasa di dunia dan kita harus berusaha untuk melestarikan warisan dan keberadaannya.
Nah, di Sumedang sendiri tentunya menggunakan bahasa Sunda, salah satu bahasa daerah yang kaya akan nilai-nilai budaya dan kearifan lokal, memiliki peran sangat penting dalam memperkukuh keterikatan hubungan sosial di antara masyarakat Sunda. Mieling poe basa indung sadunya, atau melestarikan bahasa ibu, menjadi kunci utama dalam mempertahankan dan merawat nilai-nilai kearifan lokal yang telah diwariskan dari generasi ke generasi.
Untuk tema tahun ini, seperti dilansir situs resmi UNESCO, Tema Hari Bahasa Ibu Internasional 2024 adalah "Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning". Tema yang diusung tahun ini menyampaikan pesan bahwa pendidikan multibahasa adalah pilar pembelajaran antargenerasi.
Tema tersebut sangat penting untuk pendidikan inklusif dan pelestarian bahasa asli. Dengan memulai pendidikan dalam bahasa ibu siswa dan secara bertahap memperkenalkan bahasa lain, hambatan antara rumah dan sekolah akan terjembatani, sehingga memfasilitasi pembelajaran yang efektif.
Pada tahun ini, perayaan Hari Bahasa Ibu Internasional 2024 oleh UNESCO akan menyoroti pentingnya penerapan kebijakan dan praktik pendidikan multibahasa sebagai pilar pencapaian Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan yang menyerukan pendidikan inklusif, berkualitas, dan pembelajaran seumur hidup untuk semua, serta tujuan dari Dekade Internasional tentang Bahasa Asli (2022-2032).
Dari laporan UNESCO, saat ini, sebanyak 250 juta anak dan remaja masih tidak bersekolah dan 763 juta orang dewasa tidak menguasai keterampilan literasi dasar. Pendidikan bahasa ibu mendukung pembelajaran, literasi, dan penguasaan bahasa-bahasa tambahan.
